IMAGINED BORDERS

JOAN OF ARC

As part of a printmaking project under the theme '‘imagined borders’ I explored the imagery of iconic French saint Joan of Arc with ideas of feminism and war. I was hugely inspired by the arts and crafts movement, and looked for methods to include decorative borders and motifs in the imagery I created.

Altar

My final realisation of the ‘imagined borders’ printmaking project was this 4 colour screen print! It incorporates all the themes of decoration, gender, war and nature that I explored throughout, with a signature pop of colour.

Using red, blue and yellow, I layered colour to create the winding stems of the flowers, as well as a shading effect.

This piece brought in themes of naturality and settings of war, with Joan shrouded in the shrubs of the meadow.

I used real leaves and flowers to create the impressions of the shrubs!

Soft ground etching with zinc plate.

INTO ACTION!

Printed on paper used to press the leaves!

The residue of colour can be seen blended in with the etching!

Ready for Battle

A first go at screen printing onto fabric! Just in one colour, the design features Joan reared up on a horse wielding a flag. Here i was thinking of acts of patriotism.

From a sketch! this was a development towards my final outcome of the project! i knew i wanted to include an element of nature in my work, as the theme kept cropping up… and i loved the image of a more subdued Joan.

Two tone risograph- fluorescent pink and red.

Bloom of Arc

A dip into linocut! Not my strong suit, but a great opportunity to revisit during my printmaking project. I used the experiment to dip into decorative borders and fun posing! The lines are quite wonky, but thats all the charm of lino cut.
