I AM NEWLY GROWN.
I was approached to submit for this zine online, it’s about awareness of abuse and survivor voices, and I was contacted as a queer person to create a piece for the zine and exhibition. I’d never done something like this before! With such a meaningful topic I was very conscious of what I decided to create and kew it had to portray the right kind of message personally as well as for the zine. My illustration aims to convey the feeling of rediscovering yourself when you are older, my specific affiliation being my queerness. There are roots at the feet and sprigs at the top of her arms, as she slightly unfurls from the curled up position. I aimed to create a positive body image too with the drawing.; the scars are seen as something beautiful and decorative, a healing from a pervious negative perception. She is much like me, really.
